Maternity portraits information

how to get the best from your maternity shoot

Congratulations on booking your maternity photography with Baby Shoots!

We’re looking forward to creating some beautiful maternity portraits for you, to keep forever. We have a few suggestions to help us get the best portraits for you.

Your shoot fee includes the use of our in-house maternity gown props, which are designed to create a range of styles from high-key soft and delicate to a more contemporary low-key fine art style.

Please be sure to take a good look through the existing Maternity Portraits on our website, to get a good feel for the type of images we can create for you.

Because some of our maternity gowns can be partially transparent (lacy or sheer) we recommend bringing a selection of undergarments with you, in white, nude and black colours.

If you’d like us to take portraits of you in your own clothing, we recommend bringing a small selection of garments to choose from… keeping in mind we’ll be wanting to show your “baby bump” off where possible (boob tubes can be useful).

One simple “outfit” we recommend all our clients bring is a pair of ‘normal’ jeans with a white shirt. The shirt can be a man’s shirt, and the jeans don’t need to zip up… this can be a great way to show off your bump in a very casual portrait.

Please bring light clothing with you, avoiding strong patterns, stripes & logos. If you’d like portraits involving both partners, keep in mind colour coordination between those being photographed.

Depending on which shoot type you have booked, a maternity session will usually take between 1-2 hours to complete.

Underwear in white, black and nude colours… and a couple of tops in black/white that are fitted/stretch which can prove useful during the shoot.

These can be purchased from “Vinted”, “Pretty Little Thing” etc, at quite reasonable prices.

Bardot crop tops are great for a maternity shoot and you get to choose your own style and also ensure that it fits properly.

If you have booked a standard or À la carte maternity session, then yes, we can also include a few portraits with your partner if you want to (although this is not compulsory of course).

Our maternity mini-sessions are for just our Mum-to-be.

It’s not absolutely necessary to spend extra on hair and make-up for a maternity shoot (most portraits are 3/4 length or full length, so not just heads & shoulder portraits) but obviously you can if you want to. 🙂

Please keep in mind that if you have longer hair, it can is helpful if we’re able to switch from ‘hair down’ to hair up’ during the course of your maternity shoot. This allows us to give you more variety during your photo session.

If you do decide to book a MUA we recommend completing this at home before visiting the studio. As a recommendation, we can recommend Tania Claire.

Yes, if you’re not planning to bring a partner, you’re welcome to bring a friend along for moral support.

However, we don’t recommend multiple viewers, because our studio space is quite limited, and we also find most customers are more relaxed with less people in the studio as they pose for their portraits.

For a standard maternity session, we aim to create a gallery of around 30 finished images for you to choose from.

For a maternity mini-session, we’ll create a gallery of around 20 images.

The amount of images you keep, will depend on the session you booked.

In order to minimise disruption and distractions, we do not allow customers to take their own pictures during our portrait sessions.

Please note: there is more than one road called Mill Lane in the area – so be sure to use the postcode.
